{"id":316,"date":"2024-10-20T07:58:48","date_gmt":"2024-10-20T07:58:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ukraine.bigny.com\/?p=316"},"modified":"2024-10-21T08:10:35","modified_gmt":"2024-10-21T08:10:35","slug":"under-secretary-zeyas-meetings-in-kyiv-ukraine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ukraine.bigny.com\/?p=316","title":{"rendered":"Under Secretary Zeya\u2019s Meetings in Kyiv, Ukraine"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Under Secretary of State for Civilian Security, Democracy, and Human Rights Uzra Zeya traveled to Kyiv, Ukraine, on October 18, 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While in Kyiv, Under Secretary Zeya underscored unwavering U.S. solidarity to Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration and Minister of Justice Olha Stefanishyna, Minister of Veterans Affairs Natalia Kalmykova, leadership of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine and Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor\u2019s Office, Chief Justice of the High Anti-Corruption Court of Ukraine, Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs Oleksiy Sergeyev, and First Deputy Chief of the National Police Maksym Tsutskeridze.&nbsp; She also met with investigative journalists, humanitarian workers, veterans, and internally displaced persons, including youth. Throughout her engagements, she emphasized the United States\u2019 steadfast commitment to helping Ukraine prevail; strengthening its democratic resilience; securing its Euro-Atlantic future; holding Russia accountable for its atrocities and advancing comprehensive justice for the Ukrainian people; and sustaining U.S. humanitarian assistance for the most vulnerable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, the Under Secretary&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.state.gov\/under-secretary-zeyas-remarks-at-the-10th-anniversary-ceremony-of-national-anti-corruption-bureau-of-ukraine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">spoke<\/a>&nbsp;at the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine\u2019s 10th anniversary ceremony, commending Ukraine\u2019s tremendous anti-corruption gains and resolve to build upon them, amid Russia\u2019s ongoing war of aggression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During her trip, Under Secretary Zeya announced three new initiatives to help the Ukrainian people win the war and win the future:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The\u00a0<strong>State Department Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs\u00a0<\/strong>launched a $5 million grant, in partnership with the Institute for War &amp; Peace Reporting, to increase governmental transparency and accountability by supporting civil society organizations and investigative journalists making essential contributions in the fight against corruption. It will also seek to enhance collaboration between civil society and Ukraine\u2019s independent anti-corruption institutions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The\u00a0<strong>State Department Office of Global Criminal Justice<\/strong>\u00a0awarded $2 million to the International Organization for Migration to support reparative justice for Ukrainians. The initiative will help government policy makers and civil society develop domestic reparations mechanisms for direct compensation and support to victims and survivors of Russia\u2019s crimes, laying the groundwork for Ukrainians to unlock justice at the earliest opportunity.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The<strong>\u00a0State Department Bureau of Conflict and Stabilization Operations\u00a0<\/strong>awarded $2 million to UN Women for a new partnership to advance Women, Peace, and Security (WPS) in Ukraine. With this funding, UN Women will support Ukraine\u2019s institutions to implement the National Action Plan on WPS and advance women\u2019s leadership, ownership, and participation in conflict response and recovery at all levels.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Upon departing Kyiv, Under Secretary Zeya stated, \u201cToday I was profoundly moved to meet dedicated Ukrainian government partners determined to strengthen their nation\u2019s democratic resilience, anti-corruption champions advancing a more prosperous, democratic future, and Ukrainian veterans and non-governmental leaders helping their fellow citizens regain dignity, justice and safety in the face of Russia\u2019s ongoing brutal aggression.
